Reminiscences of a Historic Landmark in My Community By Thelma Durst
The Fulstone memoir is actually an essay and oral history entitled “Reminiscences of a Historic Landmark in My Community,” written by Thelma Durst, a student at Carson City High School. Ms. Durst interviewed Mr. Fulstone, a well-known Carson City pioneer, around 1930. The original manuscript is on file at the Nevada Historical Society. Mr. Fulstone’s recollection that James G. Fair, the Comstock Mining Tycoon, built Half Way House in 1861 is incorrect. The original Half Way House was probably built in 1860, and James G. Fair did not arrive in the Comstock until 1865. Fair does appear to have had an interest in the Devil’s Gate Toll Road Company in the latter 1860s, and Half Way House was part of the Devil’s Gate system.
